Men’s Fashion: Celebrate Spring With Stripes!
Spring brings with it the chance to shed those winter coats and show off jumpers and T-shirts with plenty of colour – and there’s really no better way to do it than with stripes. Block colour has its place, but it’s so easy to overdo it with the brighter tones. Stripes allow you to splash in some colour while still looking understated – and they can also help your physique too.
Horizontal or vertical?
Ladies have much more choice when it comes to horizontal or vertical stripes; men’s stripey options are most of the time horizontal – probably because it’s so hard for a man to wear vertical stripes and not have it look at first glance like a football shirt. Horizontal stripes do have their uses though; men with thin frames will look wider with a horizontal stripe.
Thick or thin?
Bigger stripes tend to make a bolder statement than thinner ones, while ultra-fine ones will prevent those with a broader frame from looking too wide. Mixing fine and thick stripes is not often seen because it’s a difficult one to get right – mix in colour and it usually looks too busy, but when done well it can be an interesting look.
The top designers love stripes, and most have a range throwing together dark blues and whites or creams for a nautical look. It’s popular every spring and summer and that never looks like changing! Black and white as a combination is similarly timeless, but don’t be afraid of mixing colours; Original Penguin’s range shows that by offsetting the body stripes with block colour on the arms, or by using stripes only on the top half of a T-shirt, you can get away with combining some brighter colours -more than two, even – without being too flashy.
