Never Settle For Less!
Lately I’ve been having a rough time seeing eye to eye with one of my boy’s. He’s a typical boy and it’s not like he’s doing anything out of a horror flick. However, he has been displaying characteristics of a Type A personality. Sure, I’m proud of his “never settle for less” attitude, particularly at school where his competitive nature has always worked to his advantage. But that’s not the case at home. His natural tendency to be in control and compete with everyone has taken a decidedly negative turn. He turns EVERYTHING into a competition. Recently I caught him calling out a challenge his brother,”I can pee faster than anyone!” and off they went for what they called a “pee pee race.” It sounds funny but try to envision two boys trying to win at this game!
So I decided to do a little internet research on Type A personalities and I came upon a quiz that only took a couple of minutes to complete. Of course, my son’s results were as expected: Type A. Then I decided to take the test for myself. The results just blew me away. Not only did I come up as Type A, but I answered “yes” to more of the questions than my son! People have always told me I was a little controlling and a bit impatient but not once did I ever consider myself a Type A. My naive understanding of a Type A was the stereotypical control freak that had to win at all costs. But me? Never! After a little bit of self analysis, I came to one simple conclusion: I personally needed to learn how to deal with the ramifications of not “getting my way” before I started the “life-lesson speech” with my son. Cause when it comes to raising kids, you can never settle for less. If not, I’ll be the one racing him to the bathroom for a pee-pee race and we all know that wouldn’t work out to well!
